There are 170,000 broadband internet users in Belarus, says the Belarusian government.

E-Belarus.org reports that, in a speech to celebrate the opening of TIBO'2008 in Minsk, Belarusian minister of communications Nikolai Pantelei gave an update on the state of the telecoms market in Belarus.

According to the minister, there are more than 2.7m internet users in Belarus, of which 6.3 per cent (or 170,000) have broadband access. There are 100+ wi-fi access points across the country.

The minister said that about 95 per cent of the country's communication networks are based on fibre-optic infrastructure.

The minister also claimed that there were 3.5m+ fixed-line phones in Belarus - or 37.3 phones for every 100 citizens. Fixed-line communications are available in 96 per cent of villages.
