OSCE welcome at Belarus riot trials

Belarus has invited OSCE experts to monitor the trials of participants in the events that occurred on December 19 after the presidential election.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Savinykh, by doing so the country reaffirms its openness and willingness to comply with international standards in all processes.

On December 19, 2010, after the presidential election, the opposition held an unsanctioned rally in Minsk that spiraled into riots.

Over 600 people, including six presidential candidates, were detained by the police.

Several dozen people are being held on criminal charges of rioting, with some already sentenced to terms ranging from 3 to 5 years imprisonment.

The latest court proceedings are scheduled in Minsk on March 10th.
