Baku-born Israeli tipped to be envoy to Belarus

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has announced his intention to appoint Joseph Shagal ambassador to Belarus.

The former TV presenter and Knesset deputy from the party Yisrael Beiteinu (Israel is Our Home) said, "There hasn't been an appointment yet, there's been a recommendation, but I'm very glad about it."

He told the Russian-language Israeli website Cursor that "the final appointment will be decided by the government in the coming months, maybe in the summer".

Shagal, who was born in Baku, had asked the Israeli foreign minister to appoint him ambassador to Azerbaijan or head of the Native Bureau, an organization that works with Jewish diasporas in the former USSR.

The Israeli ambassador to Belarus, Edward Shapiro, has been appointed consul general to St Petersburg.

Avigdor Lieberman has appointed five ambassadors or consuls without diplomatic experience to Washington, Boston, Sao Paolo, Moscow and Kiev.
