Russian money to fund Belarusian nuclear power plant

Belarus and Russia have announced plans for construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus as well as development of bilateral energy cooperation.

Plans for the plant had been discussed previously by Vladimir Putin and President Aleksander Lukaszenko.

Belarusian media reported that the proposed plant would symbolize "the closest energy intergration system between the two countries."

In light of the ongoing nuclear emergency in Japan, both countries assured that the degree of safety would be significantly higher than at the Japanese plants. Both countries have engaged in preliminary agreements regarding construction in Ostrowiec, in the western part of Belarus.

The plant, based on a Russian plans, is estimated to cost $9 billion.
