Belarus obtains last $670 mln loan tranche from IMF

Belarus has obtained the fifth and final $670 million loan tranche from the International Monetary Fund, the country's National Bank said on Wednesday.

"Funds in the amount of $670 million have already been credited to the account of the Finance Ministry," a spokesman for the National Bank said.

The tranche has increased the total sum of the IMF's funds provided to the former Soviet republic under the international lender's standby program to about $3.46 billion.

The National Bank of Belarus has said the IMF loans helped the country to stabilize its economy in 2009 and the start of 2010, maintain stability on the foreign exchange market and strengthen the sustainability of the national finance system.

IMF experts are expected to arrive in Minsk in May to assess the results of the standby program implementation and discuss the prospects of further cooperation.

Russia refused last year to allocate the last $500 million portion of its $2 billion loan to Belarus following a series of bitter economic and political disputes between the two ex-Soviet republics.
