Flooding Hits Ukraine, Belarus

KYIV/VITSEBSK, Belarus -- Melting snow has caused flooding in parts of Ukraine and Belarus.

Rain showers and a sudden rise in temperature on March 21 caused massive amounts of snow to melt and to breech river banks.

Ukraine's Transportation and Communication Ministry said today that all highways in the northeastern Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava oblasts, as well as the western Lviv region were closed due to the rising river levels, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

Additionally, access to roads in the northwestern Volyn and southern Mykolaiv oblasts were also limited. And trucks were restricted on roads in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Volyn, Poltava, Sumy, and Chernihiv oblasts.

In neighboring Belarus, rain and a massive thaw also led to floods in Belarus's northeastern Vitsebsk Oblast, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports. Regional authorities said 26 homes were completely flooded, as were dozens of basements.

The flooding mostly affected the towns of Vitsebsk, Pastavy, Sharkaushchyna, Miyory, Hlyboky, and Lepel. About 200 emergency workers were involved in rescue operations.
