Ukrainian-Belarussian inter-parliamentary commission to hold its third meeting in second half of 2009

The Ukrainian-Belarussian inter-parliamentary cooperation commission intends to hold its third meeting in the second half of 2009.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Mykola Tomenko, who is a co-chairman of the Ukrainian-Belarussian inter-parliamentary cooperation commission, announced this at a news briefing.

"We expect [the third meeting of the Ukrainian-Belarussian inter-parliamentary cooperation commission] to be held in the second half of 2009 in the Republic of Belarus," Tomenko said.

According to him, members of the commission will agree the exact date of the meeting.

Tomenko said that the inter-parliamentary cooperation commission's regulations require it to hold a meeting once every year, but he added that it has not been able to hold a meeting for two years for objective reasons.

According to Tomenko, the first meeting of the inter-parliamentary commission took place in Minsk (Belarus) in late March 2007.

Tomenko also said that a protocol consisting of two sections was expected to be signed at the end of the inter-parliamentary commission's second meeting, which is presently taking place in Kyiv.

The first section of the protocol focuses on Ukrainian-Belarussian socioeconomic and humanitarian cooperation.

The second section of the protocol focuses on cooperation in mitigating the consequences of the Chornobyl nuclear accident.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the second meeting of the Ukrainian-Belarussian inter-parliamentary cooperation commission is taking place in Kyiv from March 25 to 26.
