BERLIN: The German government has condemned the crackdown on journalists in Belarus and called assaults on media organizations disproportional.
Government spokesman Thomas Steg said Friday that Germany calls on Belarus to "finally realize ... the ideals of human rights."
Nationwide raids followed a protest by opposition and other activists earlier this week in the capital, Minsk, in defiance of a government ban on marking a historical holiday. Dozens were arrested.
"Again there have been attacks on media groups that are being supported by the U.S. and Europe," Steg said. "These attacks are disproportional."
He said that Germany and the United States would coordinate how to deal with Belarus in the future.
