1000s of Belarus protesters face off with riot police at banned rally in Minsk

MINSK, Belarus: Several thousand protesters are facing off with Belarusian riot police in central Minsk as they stage a rally as part of a national anniversary.

The protesters are chanting "Long Live Belarus!" and waving opposition and European Union flags. Hundreds of riot police have blocked off the centrally located square.

Belarusian opposition groups have used March 25 to stage demonstrations marking Belarus' brief independence 90 years ago.

The authoritarian government of President Alexander Lukashenko has banned such rallies, and in recent years has quashed opposition groups and independent media.
