Embassy in Belarus to reduce staff

WASHINGTON, March 24 (UPI) -- The United States will reduce the U.S. Embassy staff in Minsk by about half at the Belarus government's insistence, the U.S. State Department said.

"The unfortunate actions by the Belarus authorities demonstrate that Belarus has taken a path of confrontation and isolation rather than a path of engagement and democratic reform," U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Monday.

Visa processing in Minsk is temporarily suspended, he said. Also closing are several of the American Corners, resource facilities in libraries offering access to current information about the United States, McCormack said.

"We would like a different relationship with Belarus, but that can only happen when the government of Belarus shows commitment to respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms," McCormack said.
