Belarussian president congratulates Russian president-elect

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has congratulated Russian president-elect Dmitry Medvedev on his victory in Sunday's election and pledged efforts to further bilateral ties, Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday.

"Russia is reviving, the quality of life in Russia is on the rise, and the country's weight in the international arena is growing mainly owing to the activity of President Putin," Lukashenko said in a message to incumbent President Vladimir Putin.

"I hope your ample big social and political experience and profound knowledge will be advantageous for Russia and will serve many times to our common cause -- construction of the Union State," Itar-Tass quoted Lukashenko as saying.

Medvedev, first deputy prime minister in Putin's cabinet, won by a landslide in Russia's fifth presidential election on Sunday.
