Ministry to increase international capacity to 8Gbps by 2010

Belarus' Ministry of Communications and Informatization says it is planning to increase Beltelecom's international channel capacity to 8Gbps by 2010, an eight-fold increase on current levels. According to the Minister of Communications, Nikolai Strukov, the incumbent has already upped its outer channel capacity from 465Mbps up to 1Gbps since the start of the year. At present it shares channels belonging to Teleglobe (Canada), Sprint (USA) and PeterStar of Russia. The telco is planning to develop its broadband access networks and hopes to increase the number of available ports from 2,400 to 240,000 by 2010. Beletelecom is to be privatised in 2007 as part of Belarus' plans to join the WTO.
