Belarus Says Warsaw Conference Provocative

Belarusian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said the Warsaw Conference on Belarus attended by representatives of the opposition is openly provocative.

"This conference is carried out to support individual marginal social groups in Belarus which are not supported by the Belarusian society", press secretary of the ministry Andrey Savinykh said.

The conference is used by the organizers as a tool to promote their own political ambitions and they do not care about maintaining good-neighborly relations with Belarus, he said.

According to the Foreign Ministry, organizers of the conference are also seeking to maximize the financial resources in the interests of their own ideological and advocacy structures.

On Wednesday the international conference "Solidarity with Belarus" was opened in Warsaw. This event was attended by representatives of the Belarusian opposition, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Estonia.

According to representatives of the Polish Foreign Ministry, the purpose of the conference was to develop financial and other support measures for civil society in Belarus, independent media, non-governmental organizations.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said a press conference that Belarus will receive from all the participating countries 87 million Euros.

EU commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule said it is important to immediately achieve stability in Belarus. According to him, in late February or early March, the West will hold another meeting on the situation in Belarus.
