Alleged Belarus Arms Shipment Prompts Urgent UN Call On Cote D'Ivoire Embargo

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council after reports that Belarus has broken an international arms embargo on Cote d'Ivoire.

The appeal follows reports that Belarus has broken the arms embargo by shipping three attack helicopters and related materiel to military forces supporting Cote d'Ivoire's longtime ruler who refuses to cede power after losing a presidential election.

Allan Ouattara is the internationally recognized winner of the November 28 presidential election, but Laurent Gbagbo refuses to give up the presidency.

A statement from Ban's office on February 27 said the first delivery reportedly arrived late that day, and additional flights were scheduled for today.

Ban's statement said this was "a serious violation" of the embargo against Cote d'Ivoire in place since 2004 and warned of appropriate action.
