Russia sees sanctions against Minsk as 'counterproductive'

Russia backs Belarus as a participant in international cooperation and sees sanctions imposed on Minsk by the EU and the U.S. as 'counterproductive', an official spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said Tuesday.

The EU imposed sanctions against Belarus in response to the violent arrests and imprisonment of opposition politicians following presidential elections last December.

The sanctions target members of the government headed by President Alexander Lukashenko.

The US also imposed travel bans and asset freezes on the same group of politicians.
