Polish parliament condemns Belarusian regime

WARSAW, Poland -- Poland's parliament has approved a resolution condemning the regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for repression of political opponents following a December election.

Lawmakers in the lower house on Friday demanded the immediate release of political prisoners and urged a halt to political repression.

They passed the resolution unanimously during a session attended by Belarusian pro-democracy activists.

Lukashenko won the Dec. 19 presidential election with nearly 80 percent of the vote, a poll widely regarded as fraudulent. Mass protests were violently dispersed by police and several opposition candidates arrested.

Poland strongly supports the democratic opposition in neighboring Belarus. Many of the country's current leaders were members of the anti-communist Solidarity movement.
