Poland to host donor conference for Belarus opposition in pro-democracy effort

The Associated Press

WARSAW, Poland - Poland's Foreign Ministry says representatives from the United States, the European Union and other countries will meet in Warsaw on Wednesday to raise money for the democratic opposition in autocratic Belarus.

Deputy Foreign Minister Krzysztof Stanowski said Tuesday the international donors' conference will be a "gesture of solidarity" with Belarusians living under the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko.

It comes after mass protests were brutally dispersed in December following a presidential election generally regarded as fraudulent.

Stanowski says financial and other forms of assistance will be raised for pro-democracy groups, free media outlets and Belarusian students who have been expelled for their opposition activities.
