Belarus opposition activist jailed for 4 years

A Minsk court on Thursday sentenced Belarusian opposition activist Vasily Parfenkov to four years in prison for participating in mass protests following the December 19 presidential elections in Belarus.

A total of 639 people, including Russian citizens, were detained during the December 19 unauthorized protest rally in Minsk, where the opposition said they "No" to the results of the presidential polls, which saw a landslide victory of incumbent Alexander Lukashenko.

More than 580 detainees were brought to court at the time, with the Russian Foreign Ministry standing up for Russian citizens' rights.
