Belarusian Opposition Activist Arrested On Lithuanian Border

MINSK -- The campaign manager of former Belarusian opposition presidential candidate Vital Rymasheuski has been arrested, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The opposition Christian Democratic Party (BKhD) said today Vadzim Kabanchuk was arrested at the Kamenny Loh border checkpoint while returning by bus to Belarus from Lithuania on February 13.

Police confiscated about 100 bulletins in Belarusian and Russian about the political and social situation in Belarus after the presidential election December 19.

The BKhD press service said Kabanchuk refused to sign a protocol on his detention, which claimed that he violently resisted customs officials.

Rymasheuski and other opposition presidential candidates were among hundreds arrested December 19 in Minsk during mass demonstrations against the official results of the election that declared incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka the runaway winner.

The detained opposition candidates were charged with organizing mass unrest.

Rymasheuski was released from jail January 3 but ordered not to leave Minsk until an investigation into the charges against him is completed. Three former presidential candidates remain in detention.
