Belarusian KGB Searches Home Of Trade Union Member
MINSK -- Officers from the Belarusian Committee for State Security (KGB) searched the apartment of an independent trade union member today, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.
Uladzimer Lazouski told RFE/RL the search lasted about 90 minutes. He said he does not have a computer or other technical equipment in his home, but the KGB confiscated three CDs containing music and outdated computer programs.
Lazouski said the officers told him their search warrant was linked to investigations of unsanctioned mass rallies on December 19-20 to protest official results of the presidential election.
Protesters say the results, which proclaimed incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka the winner on December 19, are fraudulent.
Hundreds of people -- including almost all opposition presidential candidates -- were arrested; many of them were beaten by police and security forces.
