Polish lawmakers mull sanctions against Belarus

Associated Press

Lawmakers have adopted a resolution suggesting sanctions against Belarus over its alleged violations of the rights of an ethnic Polish group living there.

In its resolution on Wednesday Poland's lower house condemned authorities in neighboring Belarus for repeated acts of harassment against the group, which has been banned by President Alexander Lukashenko.

Lawmakers said a return to sanctions against Lukashenko's administration should be considered.

In Monday, some 40 members of the banned ethnic Polish group were detained in Belarus en route to a court hearing concerning the future of a Polish cultural center.

Some were fined and some received five-day prison terms for participating in an illegal rally.
