Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan to have unified customs tariff

MOSCOW, February 4 (Itar-Tass) -- The work to coordinate the unified customs tariff in the framework of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan will be carried out by April 1, 2009, Igor Shuvalov, the first deputy prime minister, told reporters after the first meeting of the Customs Commission on Wednesday.

He has said the regular meeting of the Commission will be held on February 27. "We will see to what an extent the countries have coordinated the customs tariff to unify it by April 1," he said.

Besides, the next meeting will be posted on the drafting of the Customs Code. The document will be based on the Kyoto Convention. "On the whole, work proceeds according to plan, and the aim of drawing up the Customs Code in the framework of the Customs Union of the three countries will be realized," he noted.

Shuvalov also announced that participants decided to appoint Sergei Glazyev executive secretary of the Customs Commission. "He will be responsible for everyday work and for defining the parameters of our activity for months ahead," Shuvalov noted.

Glazyev holds that it will be "the main working body for the regulation of foreign trade on the common customs space of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan." "This is an important step on the way to economic integration," Glazyev stressed. "Integration cannot be achieved without setting up such a supranational body authorized to function in foreign trade," he said. The Customs Commission will be engaged in drafting and adopting the Unified Customs Codes and the effort to integrate information systems.
