Pinsk Jews Hold Roundtable

PINSK, Belarus - In the Brest Region of Belarus, the Jewish community of Pinsk has hosted an educational roundtable dedicated specifically to the theme of catastrophes experienced by European Jewry. Nearly 30 people gathered to take part in this intriguing event, which ran throughout the entire day and was met with rich feedback.

Among the highlights of this event was the presentation of awards to the winners of the second nation-wide competition "The Holocaust: History and Present. Lessons in Tolerance".

During the course of the seminar, participants shared their views about the Holocaust. "The themes of discussion were especially interesting and unusual, especially since the audience was very different from those students engaged in classes about the Holocaust at the school level," commented Iosif Liberman, the event's organizer and the Chairman of the Jewish community of Pinsk. "Additionally, everyone learned about the view of Tatyana Hvagina, one of the authors of the book "The Holocaust on Pinshine", which concerned how these tragic events unfolded in Pinsk and reflections on that theme".

Each participant in the roundtable received a gift from the local Jewish community. These included a series of short stories in the book "The Holocaust in Pinsk region" and the book "Bereg Zhuravliniy" (Cranes' Coast), authored by Zinoviy Wager. The gathering culminated with a festive concert by the community's amateur musical and dance ensembles.

The Jewish community of Pinsk is an upstanding member of the Association of Jewish Communities of Belarus and, as such, an affiliate of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS and Baltic Countries. This city, with an estimated population of 129,935 also hosts a Jewish Day School operated under the auspices of the local community.
