Trial Of Belarusian Youth Activist Set

The trial of a leader of Belarus's unregistered Youth Front movement has been scheduled for March 3, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Belarusian authorities on the Belarusian-Ukrainian border detained Artem Dubski on February 13 as he was headed to Minsk to take part in an annual opposition rally on Valentine's Day.

Dubski faces charges of illegally leaving his town once last year.

In 2008, he was found guilty of participating in an unsanctioned protest and his freedom was restricted for two years, which includes a ban on leaving his town.

He later fled to neighboring Ukraine to avoid other criminal charges against him.

Dubski was tried in absentia and found guilty of illegal use of a SIM card that allegedly caused financial losses to the Velkam Company.

Youth Front activists say Dubski's charges are politically motivated.
