Common air defense shield with Russia will not hurt Belarus' sovereignty-general

MINSK. Feb 11 (Interfax-AVN) - An agreement signed by Russia and Belarus to create their common regional air defense system is of a purely defensive nature and will not affect Belarus' sovereignty, Maj. Gen. Igor Azarenok, commander of the Belarusian Armed Forces' Air Force and Air Defense, said in an interview with the Belorusskaya Voyennaya Gazeta newspaper published on Wednesday.

"The establishment of a common regional air defense system by no means affects the sovereignty of our country. On the contrary, the absence of such a system considerably increases the risk of its infringement," Azarenok said.

The agreement's sole goal is to defend the Russia-Belarus Union, the general said. "The word "defense" in the phrase "air defense" highlights the purpose and importance of this agreement," he added. Air defense cooperation remains a crucial area of military contacts between Belarus and Russia, he said.
