Russia, Belarus Defense Progressive

Minsk, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) Belarus Foreign Minister Serguei Martinov affirmed on Tuesday the agreement signed with Russia on joint antiaircraft defense is not a reaction to the US antimissile system and has been underway for years.

The agreement signed on February 3 in Moscow means nothing new from the military, political viewpoint in regards to the existing situation before Washington decided to set up the antimissile system in Europe, that is why the accord is not a countermeasure, the minister said.

He also said it was unjustified to speculate about Moscow allegedly imposing on Minsk, or Belarus giving up part of its sovereignty.

The agreement on the creation of a joint air defense system is simply the legal confirmation of what had been going on for years, Martinov stressed.

The system will comprise five aviation units, ten of missiles, five radio-technical and one radio-electronic, informed Colonel General Alexander Zelin, chief of the Russian Air Force.
