Lukashenko Offers Building Help

By The Moscow Times

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko told President Vladimir Putin on Sunday that his country was ready to help with construction for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Speaking at Putin's Bocharov Ruchei residence in Sochi, Lukashenko proposed the creation of a "Belarussian corner" at the Olympic Village, Interfax reported. "In total, 70 sites need to be built here, and we'd like it if one of them could be built by Belarus," Lukashenko said. He also said Belarussian construction materials could be used, RIA-Novosti reported.

During the part of the meeting open to journalists, Putin did not offer Lukashenko an answer to his proposal, although a source in the Kremlin said the proposal seemed reasonable, Vedomosti reported.

It was unlikely that Belarus would be involved in the construction of any of the athletic complexes, the source told Vedomosti, adding that a hotel would be more likely.
