Neo-Nazi groups "under control"of State Security Committee in Belarus - official

There are neo-Nazi groups in Belarus, but they are inconsiderable in number, according to Andrei Saladovnikov, deputy chief of the Interior Ministry's juvenile delinquency prevention department, news agency BelaPAN says.

The news agency is quoting the official as saying that "fortunately, the situation is under control." Saladovnikov admitted that there were such groups, but they were inconsiderable in number, poorly-organized and were not popular among the young generation. Saladovnikov underlined that persons suspected of being part of far-right groups are under "control" of the State Security Committee (KGB) and police. The official recalled an incident when Chinese students were beaten a year ago and the prosecution failed to prove that the attackers were "skinheads" despite their clothes and slogans, which he noted suggested that the youths were members of a neo-Nazi group. He noted that soccer fans also cause concern: "they are quite a destructive force as well" and "the experience of other countries shows that it is largely soccer fans turning skinheads."
