Father of Belarusian orphan found?

A man thought to be the father of the 10-month old Belarusian boy suffering from cystic fibrosis and facing extradition to Belarus, has agreed to have his DNA examined.

The boy's mother, a Belarusian citizen, renounced parental rights right after the baby was born.

"The man was questioned. He does not deny that he was sexually involved with the boy's mother. He consented to a DNA examination that will either confirm or rule out the possibility of him being the boy's father`', said Beata Syk-Jankowska. spokesperson for the Circuit prosecutor's Office in Lublin, quoted by "Rzeczpospolita"

The prosecutor's office has appealed against the court's decision to extradite the baby to Belarus. The boy, referred to as Jas in the Polish media, is currently at a hospital in Gdansk, northern Poland.

The boy's mother has appealed to the head of the Lubelskie province to grant her residence permit. The woman has three children. She has been living in Poland since 1996. (mn)
