Beltelecom calms fears over possible price rises

Beltelecom, the monopoly fixed line operator in Belarus, has moved to reassure customers that the recent setting up of a fund to support universal access will not result in price hikes. The statement followed an announcement from the country's president, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, which has ordered telecoms operators to pay 1.5% of their annual proceeds into the fund, sparking fears that service providers will pass on the increase to end users. Beltelecom has, however, reassured its subscribers that fees are not expected to rise and that the government has lowered the companies' contributions to the budgetary innovation fund from 19% to 17.5% of their revenues.
