Belarus' Diamond Imports Up 22% In 2006

Belarus' rough diamond imports in 2006, at over 62,000 carats worth over US$17 million, increased by over 22 percent in terms of carats compared with 2005, says a spokesman for the Belarussian Finance Ministry. However, in terms of value, this marked a fall of 20 percent.

Belarus imported over 22,000 carats for nearly US$7 million in the fourth quarter, up over 50 percent from the third quarter, and up 70 percent from the previous year. In monetary terms this marked an increase of 110 percent from the previous quarter, but a fall of nearly 60 percent in value from the previous year.
