Belarus Decries Foreign Meddling

Minsk, Feb 21 (Prensa Latina) The Community of Independent States has denounced an international campaign led by the US and European Union against the presidential elections in Belarus.

The Russian News agency Interfax said CIS observers declared that US and EU officials are spreading rumors and making public comments against the arrangements for the presidential elections.

The release warns that the campaign especially targets the turn out and is directed against a sovereign state so is in violation of international laws.

Central Election Commission sources said the signature collection process has been peaceful with the leading candidates collecting the minimum quota of more than 100,000 signatures.

President Alexander Lukashenko assured that the March 19 elections will run smoothly and the authorities will not permit destabilization, alluding to Georgia (2003) and Ukraine (2004).
