Four presidential candidates registered in Belarus

MINSK-ASTANA, February 17, 2006. KAZINFORM. - The Belarussian Central Election Commission registered Friday four presidential candidates for the presidential election due on March 19.

At a special meeting of the Central Election Commission candidate certificates were presented to incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, common candidate from the opposition Alexander Milinkevich, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Sergei Gaidukevich and leader of the Social Democratic Party Alexander Kozulin.

The Central Election Commission announced the results of the sign-up campaign in support of the presidential candidates. Alexander Lukashenko is leading with 1,903,069 valid signatures collected in his support. More than 180,000 signatures were collected in support of Alexander Milinkevich, Sergei Gaidukevich and Alexander Kozulin are following him. Central Election Commission Chairwoman Lidia Yermoshina said at the registration ceremony that the commission found no reasons to deny registration to all four presidential hopefuls after the examination of other documents, including declarations of their incomes and property and their biographies, Kazinform quotes Itar-Tass
