From Belarus with love - and a 4,000GBP donation

MORE children from Belarus will be given the chance to come to the Ely area on holiday next year, thanks to a mammoth fundraising effort.

Members of the Etheldreda Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes have raised more than ?4,000 over the last few months for the Chernobyl Children Lifeline East link.

The charity gives children from Belarus - the country worst affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster - respite care by bringing them to the UK for a holiday.

Denis Peacock, a member of the Ely lodge who helped organise the fundraising campaign, said: "Having assisted the link in some small way previously, the Etheldreda Lodge was of the opinion they should do something more.

"The lodge approached the other lodges in the province. All gave their support and each helped in their own way.

"One member approached ASLEF and the Cambridge Train Crews Social and Welfare Fund and obtained substantial donations from both."

Mr Peacock was assisted in the fundraising by Sidney Gage and the cheque was handed over the cash at a special presentation event at Willingham Social Club on Sunday.

Children from Belarus currently visiting Cambridgeshire enjoyed music from Russian musicians and a bar-room sketch by members of the Outlaws Western Club, which donated ?1,450 to the charity in January.
