Belarus parliament session to confirm appointment of new PM

MINSK: The Belarusian parliament will convene for an extraordinary session today to confirm the appointment of Mikhail Myasnikovich as the new Prime Minister.

"Pursuant to the Constitution of Belarus, the head of state ruled to convene an extraordinary session of the House of Representatives (lower house of parliament) in Minsk on January 27 for confirming the appointment of the Prime Minister and consideration of other issues, if need be," the presidential press service told Itar-Tass earlier.

The new Prime Minister already visited Moscow last week. It was his first working trip.

Myasnikovich was the head of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences before the appointment. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko described the new Prime Minister as a very flexible person capable of organising collegial work of the new government.

Lukashenko accepted the resignation of the previous government on December 27, 2010, following his re-election for a new term.
