Opposition riot was coup attempt - Belarusian minister

The Belarusian government believes the opposition rioting against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko on December 19th was an attempted coup. Interior Minister Anatoly Kuleshov told this to reporters on Wednesday. He said that the rioters were trying to seize government buildings, but were prevented from doing so by police.

According to opposition sources, more than 600 people, including 5 unsuccessful presidential candidates, found themselves under arrest. Fifty are facing criminal charges.

The European Union has threatened to impose sanctions on Belarus unless all detainees are immediately freed .
