Azerbaijani MP honored with Francysk Skaryna medal

Chairman of the Milli Majlis committee on economic policy, academician Ziyad Samadzade awarded medal of Francysk Skaryna of the Belarusian Republic.

Chairman of the Azerbaijan - Belarus Friendship Society Arif Mehtiyev highlighted the activity of the facility. He stressed relations between the countries were steadily developing.

Belarus ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikolai Patskevich read out decree of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko to confer the medal upon academician Ziyad Samadzade.

He was awarded for his contribution to strengthening friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Belarus.

The event brought together members of the Milli Majlis, academicians, scientists and journalists.

Francysk Skaryna was a Belarusian famous as one of the first publishers in Eastern Europe, laying groundwork for the development of the Belarusian language. Some researchers maintain that Skaryna`s books were in Church Slavonic heavily saturated with Belarusian. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Skaryna laid the foundations of the Belarusian literary language.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Minsk the capital of Belarus, had Skaryna Avenue. However, in 2005, under the rule of Alexander Lukashenko, it was renamed into Independence Avenue. Old Barysau Path was renamed into Skaryna Street.

Several cultural organizations are named after Skaryna, particularly the Frantsishak Skaryna Belarusian Language Society and the Francis Skaryna Belarusian Library and Museum, London.

Two awards presented by Belarus were named in honor of Skaryna: the Medal of Francysk Skaryna and Order of Francysk Skaryna.
