Lukashenko inaugurated as president

Alexander Lukashenko was inaugurated as Belarus's president on Friday, swearing to serve his people on the country's Constitution.

This is the fourth time Mr. Lukashenko has become Belarus's president.

The official data on the Belarusian presidential elections which took place on December 19 say that about 80% of the voters voted for Mr. Lukashenko.

Meanwhile, most Western countries do not recognize these elections as democratic, claiming that the votes were counted with breaches of international norms.

They also condemn the Belarusian authorities for arresting 600 participants of an opposition rally which took place the next day after the elections, including 6 former candidates for presidency.

On the day of Mr. Lukashenko's inauguration, ambassadors of EU countries left Belarus in protest.
