Minsk confirms officially detention of ex-presidential candidate

MINSK, January 18 (Itar-Tass) - Belarus' law enforcement agencies confirmed the detention of ex-presidential candidate Ivan Kulikov in Minsk.

Kulikov was not registered as a presidential candidate as he failed to collect necessary signatures and announced his withdrawal from the presidential race.

He heads the laboratory of nuclear power facilities of the United Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research in Sosny.

According to the co-chair of the committee on protection of prisoners' rights Over Barrier, Timofei Dranchuk, on Monday police searched Kulikov's flat in Sosny outside Minsk. After this he was detained for 72 hours.

On December 19, the election day in Belarus, opposition members protested against the election results. The protests turned into riots and clashes with police and security forces. Hundreds of protesters were detained.

At present, ex-presidential candidates Andrei Sannikov, Vladimir Neklyaev, Nikolai Statkevich and Alexei Mikhalevich remain under arrest.
