Benefit Performance For Belarus Troupe

Compiled by LARRY ROHTER

The Public Theater and LaMaMa are sponsoring an encore benefit performance on Monday night of "Being Harold Pinter," the play that the Belarus Free Theater has been performing at the Under the Radar festival, which ended on Sunday. Tom Stoppard and Tony Kushner will host the event, at the Public, which is meant to draw attention to the plight of the Belarussian troupe (including Yana Rusakevich, above), whose members have been subjected to arrest and harassment by the government of Belarus, a former Soviet republic now ruled by Aleksandr G. Lukashenko. Readings by celebrity guests will also be part of the event, which will be followed on Wednesday by a noon protest in front of Belarus's mission to the United Nations and another evening benefit celebrating the group and its commitment to freedom of expression, this one at Le Poisson Rouge and featuring Mr. Stoppard and the novelists E. L. Doctorow and Don DeLillo.
