Finland tells Belarus to free opposition members

Alexander Stubb (cons), the Finnish foreign minister, told his Belarusian opposite number, Sergei Martynov, on Tuesday that the country's officials must free jailed members of the opposition.

Stubb said after talks with Martynov in Helsinki that events after last month's election in Belarus had not helped the country's efforts to improve its relations with the EU.

Alexander Lukashenko won re-election as president in a vote that was widely condemned as fraudulent. The police arrested more than 600 opposition members in a crackdown.
