Hungary Hints At Revision Of EU's Visa Ban On Belarus

The Hungarian ambassador to Belarus, Ferenc Kontra, has said that Belarus should release all of the protesters detained in the wake of Belarus's presidential election last month or face possible visa bans for top officials.

The European Union had imposed sanctions on Belarus after a disputed ballot in 2006 but suspended the sanctions in 2008.

Kontra said the old list "does not correspond to actual reality anymore, so maybe this list will be revised."

"A list of banned Belarussian officials does exist. It is frozen for now," Kontra said. "Of course, this list does not correspond to actual reality anymore, so maybe this list will be revised. That kind of work is already being done. But it will be, once again, a decision of the ministers of foreign affairs."

EU diplomats on January 4 also discussed reinstating the visa ban on President Alyaksandr Lukashenka and other Belarusian officials.

Hungary currently holds the rotating EU Presidency.
