Russia, Belarus agree on transit of oil

(AP:MOSCOW) Russia and Belarus have agreed on transit terms for Moscow's oil imports to Europe, a senior Kremlin official said Wednesday.

Russia asked its neighbor and strategic partner Belarus to pay full import duties on crude oil it refines and transits to the West, abolishing a 65 percent discount. Moscow said it was ready to provide tax-free oil for Belarus' internal consumption, in line with an existing deal.

Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin said in televised remarks that several agreements that "ensure the interests" of Russian companies have been signed with Belarusian officials. He did not elaborate on the terms of the agreements.

Belarus consumes about a quarter and ships the rest onward in a lucrative cargo worth more than a third of the country's export revenues.
