Turkmen President starts official visit to Belarus

Today, at the invitation of the Belarusian side, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov began a two-day official visit to the Republic of Belarus. As the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat quoting the press service of the head of state, the program of the two-day visit of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Minsk is "extremely busy and along with top-level talks includes visits to major industrial enterprises and important socio-cultural destination."

As part of preparations for the upcoming visit to Minsk, the intergovernmental Belarusian-Turkmen commission on economic cooperation held a working meeting, following which the sides signed a minutes of the meeting and a framework agreement between the State Concern Turkmenhimiya and the Belarusian JSC Belgorkhimprom on the survey of the deposit of potassium salts in Lebap province. In addition, separate meetings and negotiations were held at a number of Belarusian ministries and departments to discuss the prospects of stepping up the bilateral partnership on priority areas.

According to the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan, trade turnover between the two countries amounted to over US $ 74,172 million in 2009, which is a US $ 8.3 million increase year-on-year. Embassies operate in the capitals of the two countries, and direct air service between Ashgabat and Minsk has been maintained since 2007.
