ISPs get green light to offer Wi-Fi

Licensed ISPs in Belarus will be able to offer wireless broadband services based on Wi-Fi technology after the Minister of Communications and Informatisation agreed to sanction the go-ahead of such services. Local online news portal e-Belarus writes that the decision was taken at the last meeting of the Security Council State Commission on Radiofrequences, and means that a 2400MHz-2483.5MHz radio frequency with radiated power not exceeding 100MWt has been set aside for wireless broadband access in the country. Until now, only Beltelecom, the national incumbent operator, has been allowed to provide Wi-Fi access in the 2.4GHz band. It has rolled out more than 210 access points, including at least 130 in Minsk and others in major regional and district centres. At present, over 2,000 unique users connect via Wi-Fi networks in Belarus.
