MINSK. Jan 9 (Interfax) - A Ukrainian-style dispute will be avoided in Belarusian-Russian relations in the gas sector, although there is still no officially confirmed gas price for 2009, Belarusian First Deputy Energy Minister Eduard Tovpenets said.
"We will not see a crisis similar to the situation with Ukraine," Tovpenets told Interfax on Friday, dismissing any questions regarding this matter as "provocative."
"We have a [2007-2010] valid contract with Gazprom. An additional agreement to it [on prices for 2009] could be signed in January," he said.
The official, however, refused to name any gas price for the first quarter of 2009 and the year as a whole. "These prices will cease to be a commercial secret when we set gas prices for domestic consumers. All the remaining matters are commercial terms. No company will tell the press what price it pays for various commodities," he said.
This year's "gas price for Belarus will be "floating"," he added.
