Belarus offers Russia to take part in infrastructure projects

Belarus offers Russia to implement several infrastructure projects worth of approximately RUB 100 billion, Transport and Communications Minister of Belarus Vladimir Sosnovsky said at a ministerial session on January 29, BelTA informs.

"The Belarusian transport industry has many projects, both of the international and local importance, in which Russian investors can take part," the Minister said. According to him, upgrading the second transport corridor that crosses Belarus is one of the infrastructure projects. The reconstruction project for the railway built along the corridor is being elaborated as well. "We offer the Russian side to start the modernization of the railway in order to increase the speed regime from 140kmh to 160kmh," he said. According to the Minister, the project is quite expensive as it requires new signaling, communications, security systems and the reconstruction of the railway tracks.

In his words, the second infrastructure project has long-term prospects as it implies development of the ninth transport corridor Odessa-Kiev-Gomel-Vitebsk-Pskov-St Petersburg. "The project covers motorway M-8 Gomel-Mogilev-Vitebsk and the railway to St Petersburg which needs up-to-date infrastructure," the Minister said.

The projects have been sent to the Russian side. They are expected to be announced before a session of the Union State Council of Ministers.

According to the Minister, today it is difficult to say what amount of investments is necessary for the implementation of these projects. "The preliminary amount is RUB 100 billion. It will take five to six years to implement the projects," Vladimir Sosnovsky said.
