Belarus FM Martynov met up with EU Troika

On 27 January 2009, Belarus Foreign Minister Sergei Martynov held talks with the EU Troika.

The EU was represented by Karel Schwarzenberg, Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic holding the EU's presidency, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, EU Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, senior officials of the EU Council Secretariat and Swedish Foreign Ministry that would take over the EU's presidency in the second half of 2009.

The sides reviewed the evolution of the bilateral relations, following the previous meeting of the Belarus Foreign Minister with the EU Troika in October 2008 in Luxembourg, and concluded that the sides had upheld the positive impetus in the relations that was stepped up by Belarus and the EU in 2008 to meet each other halfway. Belarus and the European Union underscored their interest in continuing to build trust and forge a mutually beneficial partnership.

The sides also highlighted pressing regional issues including the EU initiative to create an Eastern Partnership.

The meeting ended with a subject-matter exchange of opinions on economy and energy. The EU delegation expressed strong appreciation of the Belarus actions during the recent gas crisis that bore out our country's reputation as EU's credible partner in energy transit. The sides also took note of the serious potential for the mutually beneficial co-operation in energy and focussed on how the economic crunch affected the development of the EU and Belarus and explored the possibilities of mitigating its aftermath, building up on closer co-operation.
