President of Belarus to meet with members of national and foreign scientific community

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is set to meet with representatives of the national and international scientific community on January 23, BelTA learnt from the presidential press service.

Since the President's decree No 281 of May 15, 1997 "On the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB)" was issued to assign the NASB the status of the supreme state-run scientific organization, the country has implemented a wide set of measures to expand the academy's terms of reference and develop the legal base of its activity.

The NASB legal status has been so far regulated by three presidential decrees and twenty laws of the Republic of Belarus.

In the scientific and innovation area alone the Academy has been pursuing such major goals as securing economic, social and state-legal development of the country. The NASB is also responsible for outlining the list of priority development areas, organisation and coordination of the fundamental and applied R&D, drawing up a list of state comprehensive sci-tech programmes, training scientific and pedagogical highly-qualified personnel.

Today the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is the country's largest research, development and production centre comprising 122 organisations. Among them are 45 research institutions and centres, 11 state scientific production associations and scientific practical centres, 47 other scientific and production organisations.

In 2008, the NASB was involved in the implementation of more than 2700 programmes and projects.

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has been developing mutually beneficial relations with international scientific organisations within the framework of over 60 cooperation agreements with scientific centers from 40 countries.
