Ukraine about to export some 3bn kW electricity to Belarus in 2009

Ukraine announced plans to export around 3 billion kW electricity to Belarus in 2009, Ukraine's Fuel and Energy Minister Yuriy Prodan reported.

According to him, technical capacities allow to export about 6 billion kW electricity. "Why it is just Belarus? Because there are technical capacities for that. Secondly, there is a desire of the Belarusian side to get electricity. And we, in this connection, because of the production slowdown, are interested in increasing electricity exports," he said. After the Ukraine-Belarus talks in Chernihiv on Tuesday, Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko said that Ukraine would shortly restore electricity supplies to Belarus as soon as the relevant agreement is signed by ministries and agencies.
